EARTH MANUAL PROJECT Exhibition

EARTH MANUAL PROJECT Exhibition

Japan Foundation, Bangkok, in partnership with Art Bridge Chiang Rai (ABCR), is proud to present the traveling exhibition “EARTH MANUAL PROJECT” at the gallery, Art Bridge Chiang Rai from 23th July to 26 August 2016.

Originally initiated by Design and Creative Center Kobe (KIITO), EARTH MANUAL PROJECT encourages a country of frequent natural disasters, such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and Thailand, to become a country of excellent disaster preparedness. The exhibition’s maiden run happened for the first time in October 2013 in Kobe, Japan, wherein 23 projects from different Asian countries showcased activities centered on disaster risk reduction and post-disaster relief and recovery. After that, it was held in Manila at Ayala Museum, Baguio and Ilio Ilio, the Philippines. Then the exhibition came to Thailand and exhibited at TCDC Chiang Mai between December 15, 2015 to April 3, 2016, and now coming to Art Bridge Chiang Rai, introducing 12 various disaster-related activities.

This exhibition is a great opportunity for all the visitors to make their own disaster preparedness manual based on the presented projects, as well as for audience to hear stories and expertise from overseas creators. For instance, as Chiang Rai was hardly hit by an earthquake at 6.3 on the Richter scale, which was the strongest earthquake ever recorded in Thailand, shaked both northern Thailand and Myanmar in the evening of May 5, 2014. Windows, walls, roads and temples all suffered from the quake. Approximately one hundred repeated shocks during the whole day were reported by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and many people were in panic, not knowing how to prepare and protect themselves from the earthquake. Thus, this EARTH MANUAL PROJECT exhibition could show case studies of disaster preparedness in each country which Chiang Rai local people could learn from their experiences including the “Core House,” project of Indonesia how to build an emergency housing as the temporary shelter before expanding it into more effective housing functions, etc.

For more information, visit EARTH MANUAL PROJECT website at https://www.earthmanual.org/?en to view all 23 projects that were firstly exhibited in Japan.
