The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional association open to all persons interested in Asia and the study of Asia. With approximately 8,000 members worldwide, representing all the regions and countries of Asia and all academic disciplines, the AAS is the largest organization of its kind. With over 3,000 attendees in the Annual Conference each year, 350+ panel sessions, a book exhibition, and much more, the AAS Annual Conference is the must-attend event for anyone interested in the study of Asia.
On July 1st – 4th, 2019, the AAS-in-Asia Conference was held at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. The Japan Foundation has provided a support for 28 Japanese Studies scholars from many countries in South and Southeast Asia to join the event here in Thailand as well as organized a special panel and networking session in the conference such as the Japan Foundation Special Roundtable entitled “Metamorphosis of Japanese Studies : Towards Multidisciplinary Collaboration in the Global Age” by inviting 5 Japanese studies scholars from Japan, USA, Thailand and Singapore to share their experiences and to examine the outcomes and challenges found in the past efforts of promoting and developing Japanese Studies collaborative projects around the world, and discuss the importance of regional studies to cross not only geographical but also disciplinary borders to continue expanding far into the horizon.
In addition, as a side-event, we’ve received a fully cooperation from Institute of East Asian Studies, Thammasat University for hosting a study tour for our invited scholars to explore its facilities and exchanging information about “the Current Trends of Japanese Studies in Thailand” by many Thai experts including President of Japanese Studies Association of Thailand and others.
