Watanabe Kanji chief of the citizens service section of municipal government office, has never been absent from work for 30 years, but he takes a day off for the first time when he discovers that he effected with stomach cancer and will soon die.

Of  Kurosawa Akira’s numerous masterpieces, this film is one of his representative pieces; it garnered rave reviews for his earnest attempt to explore the meaning of human life and a sharp criticism on beadledom. Although he is a diligent city office employee, his life is in fact a living death. However, upon realizing that not much time is left for him in this word, he actually starts “ living” for people at society.
