The Japan Foundation, Bangkok, in cooperation with UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education (UNESCO Bangkok), SILENT MANGA AUDITION® (SMA), and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) proudly presented our online lecture and one-on-one workshop ‘Enlighten Manga Characteristics and Possibilities’.

Manga is a well-known Japanese entertainment pop culture genre for global readers and has been using a graphic, artistic medium to communicate among diverse peoples both within and beyond Asia for over a century. This online lecture and one-on-one workshop, ‘Enlighten Manga Characteristics and Possibilities’, conducted by Mr. OGAWA Tsuyoshi, Associate Professor, Kyoto Seika University, explored Japanese manga’s characteristics, history and the uniqueness of ‘silent manga’. Application to the workshop is by submission; 8 in-person participants was selected on the basis of their portfolios and received guidance from a first-hand manga education from manga master Mr OGAWA Tsuyoshi. Both activities broadcasted live on The Japan Foundation, Bangkok YouTube Live website on Saturday 4 December 2021, from 16:00 – 18:15, Bangkok time (UTC+7).

Moreover, an exhibition showcase,‘Together for Peace Silent Manga Exhibition’, currently at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre’, displayed 15 of 274 silent manga entries from many countries to the SILENT MANGA AUDITION® (SMA), Round 13, from Tuesday 16 November 2021 to Sunday 5 December 2021, at the Curved Wall, 3rd floor, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), every day 10:00 to 19:00 (except Mondays). During this exhibition, there were two special events: Online screening of ‘the silent manga film ‘SKY SKY’, followed by a talk with Thai film director Mr Nonzee Nimibutr, on Wednesday, 24 November 2021, at 13:00; and three live manga Illustration sessions provided by Thailand’s KP Learning Space, on Saturday 4 December, 14:00 to 16:00, and Sunday 5 December 2021, 14:00 to 18:00 (Bangkok time, UTC+7).

One-on-One Workshop Qualification

  • This workshop is free of charge
  • No limitation in age, gender, education background or level of experience
  • Participant must be able to join physically at BACC and agrees to make public your submitted portfolio and yourself during live broadcasting from 15:30 – 18:15 (Bangkok time; UTC+7) on Saturday 4 December 2021.

One-on-One Workshop: How to Join

  1. Prepare a short explanation about your portfolio no longer than 5 lines in Thai on your first page of your portfolio file in a PDF format, with a maximum of 8 pages and 10MB in file size. This can consist of any kind of artworks, short manga, character design or illustration.
  2. Fill in the application form; make sure to consent to Japan Foundation  publicizing your work and yourself during live broadcasting; and attach your portfolio at https://forms.gle/4aHM8uWKqMmAuwtL9. The call for applications will end on Friday, 26 November 2021 at 12:00 noon; please note: the call for applications will close earlier if it reaches full capacity. Application closure and results will be announced on The Japan Foundation, Bangkok’s Facebook page and website.
  3. The first 6 participants with complete portfolio chosen will be informed via email.
  4. Please confirm your participation by 1 December 2021. On the event day, please read your submitted, first page short portfolio explanation to Mr. OGAWA Tsuyoshi before receiving his feedback.

About Speaker

Mr. OGAWA Tsuyoshi
Associate Professor
Character Design Course, Faculty of Manga, Kyoto Seika University

As a manga curator, he is interested in exhibitions and events that focus on manga production processes. Former instances include the Kyoto International Manga Museum; Pompidou Center (France); Japan Creative Center (Singapore); and the Kumamoto City Museum of Contemporary Art. He is involved in the planning of exhibitions at the Yunomae Manga Museum, the establishment of the Koshi Manga Museum, and the Kochi Manga BASE. As an educator, he is engaged in manga teaching plan construction, manga classes, and hands-on workshops in art education. In addition, he receives requests from companies and local governments with the keyword “manga expression x design” and produces illustrations, character designs, package designs, and others.

After working as a researcher and a part-time lecturer at the Graduate School of Kyoto University, she is now working as a part-time lecturer at Aichi Shukutoku University (‘History of Manga and Anime’; ‘Theories about Manga’)
