“Renowned Japanese Yokai Calligrapher, Ouka’s First Live Drawing Performance in Bangkok”

The Japan Foundation, Bangkok proudly present an extraordinary cultural experience: the first-ever live drawing performance in Bangkok by Ouka, Japan’s renowned Yokai calligrapher. This unique event, featuring a live drawing demonstration and interactive Q&A session, will be held on the Nippon Stage (Siam Square One – Walking Street Side) at Siam J-Show 2024 on Saturday 30 November 2024 from 14:30 to 15:00.
Ouka, whose calligraphy journey began at the age of six, has captivated audiences across Japan with her innovative blend of traditional calligraphy and Yokai art, the mystical beings from Japanese folklore. Graduating in Calligraphy Studies from Nara University of Education, she has dedicated her career to merging the traditional beauty of Japanese calligraphy with artistic depictions of Yokai, using traditional Nara ink to create these enigmatic figures. Her prestigious projects include designing for Japan’s celebrated Yo-kai Watch series, commemorative calligraphy for Kashihara Shrine’s 130th anniversary, and artwork for the World Heritage Gango-ji Temple, among others.
Japanese Sumi-e ink painting and calligraphy have been cherished art forms in Japan for over many centuries. Each brushstroke in Sumi-e and calligraphy embodies grace and profound cultural expression, often evoking the essence of nature and spirituality. This live performance offers a rare glimpse into this storied tradition, inviting the audience to witness Ouka’s skill and passion as she brings her art to life before our eyes.
Ouka’s upcoming live performance in Bangkok is a part of Siam J-Show 2024, celebrating the cultural ties between Japan and Thailand. Spanning three days, this vibrant festival will transform Siam Square’s main street into a dynamic Japanese experience, offering attendees an opportunity to deepen their appreciation of Japanese art, culture, and heritage.

About the artist
Ouka
Ouka, who began calligraphy at age six, has enchanted audiences with her fusion of traditional Japanese calligraphy and yokai art. A graduate of Nara University of Education’s Calligraphy Studies program, she combines classic techniques with creative depictions of yokai using traditional Nara ink. Her notable works include character design for the popular Yo-kai Watch series, commemorative calligraphy for Kashihara Shrine’s 130th anniversary, and artwork for the World Heritage Gango-ji Temple. In recent years, Ouka has held major exhibitions and continues to spread the allure of ink art through Monomon, an association she founded to keep these traditions alive.
