The Japan Foundation, Bangkok, in collaboration with Creative Economy Agency (CEA) via Thailand Creative & Design Center Chiang Mai (TCDC Chiang Mai) proudly presented the international talk of “The Designer in Residency” during Chiang Mai Design Week 2024onTuesday 10 December 2024, 13:00 –16:00 at Auditorium, 1F, TCDC Chiang Mai. As a part of the international talk, Mr. SHINOZAKI Makoto, from Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art, Japan also joined to share his insights and experiences on “Artist  Residency in Mashiko,”  followed by Mr. Ben Chiu, Executive Director of Taiwan Designers’ Web from Taiwan and Dr. Alexia Holt, Cove Park, from Scotland.

While the whole talks on “The Designer in Residency” necessarily encompassed great opportunities to learn various captivating perspectives of residency program in Japan, Taiwan and Scotland through their excelled modus operandi for successful program implementation, the special talk on “Artist Residency in Mashiko” delved specifically into extended dimensions of not only the profound direction of residency program at Mashiko city in Japan but also proactive engagement with local communities and global collaboration.

On this occasion, thus, Mr. SHINOZAKI Makoto, Mashiko Museum Residency Program Officer, shared his arrays of knowledge and experiences of running the artist residency in Mashiko which attracted prominent artists around the world to partake in the program. We aspired that this talk would galvanize the potentials of individual, collective artists, creators, designers, art studios, institutions, and the likes to mutually learn and elicit their best practices while realizing the significance of embracing local communities and working together with them. By this way, we could ensure and sustain the wholesome exchanges of differing art and cultures across countries through the residency program.

The Japan Foundation, Bangkok co-organized this event in Chiang Mai with Creative Economy Agency (CEA) via Thailand Creative & Design Center Chiang Mai (TCDC Chiang Mai) as a part of Chiang Mai Design Week 2023 themed “Scaling Local: Creativity,  Technology and Sustainability.”

Born in 1960 in Chigasaki-city, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Due to his father’s transfer, he spent five years from 1974 at a boarding school “Royal Russell School” in Croydon Surrey in England. After returning to Japan, Shinozaki entered the Department of English Literature at Sophia University. After graduating in 1983, he joined JTB Global Marketing & Travel, mainly in charge of planning for foreign visitors to Japan. Then, he retired in March 2023 after 40 years with the JTB. Appointed to the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art in July 2023, with his desire to continue working in international exchange-related work, Shinozaki is currently in charge of planning and organizing the residency program of the Mashiko international cultural exchange program.
