JFF THEATER
a Platform for the Free Worldwide Streaming of Japanese Films, Opens Today
The Japan Foundation (JF) launched its new streaming website, JFF Theater, on August 1, 2024. JFF Theater distributes Japanese films and other works worldwide, with multilingual subtitles and all free of charge. With this website, JF endeavors to create a platform where Japanese audiovisual works can be viewed anytime, anywhere.
JF’s online film-distribution projects, which have so far featured Japanese films and dramas, have been viewed more than 650,000 times in over 130 countries, demonstrating the high level of international interest in Japanese content. In response, JF has launched the JFF Theater online streaming platform as a way to further popularize Japanese audiovisual works around the world.
With the catchphrase Moved, Touched & Inspired, JF strives to serve as a bridge between Japan and the world, forging connections, and inspiring exchanges between the audience.
What is JFF Theater?

SUMODO ∼The Successors of Samurai ∼

A film all about sumo—Japan’s national sport. A documentary with rare access into the behind-the-scenes lives of famous sumo wrestlers.
Tora-san in Goto
Director: OURA Masaru
Japan release date: 2008
A documentary shot from 1993 and over 22 years chronicled a large family who make their living as udon noodle makers on the Goto Archipelago in Nagasaki Prefecture.
● JFF(Japanese Film Festival)
In 2016, The Japan Foundation, as part of the JFF Asia-Pacific Gateway Initiative, established the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) with the aim to share Japanese cinema with 10 ASEAN countries and Australia. We have expanded to China and India in 2017, and then to Russia in 2018. In 2023, JFF was held in 10 countries with more than 120,000 participants. JFF is scheduled to be held again in 10 countries in 2024.
