The Japanese Film Festival organized by the Japan Foundation has eventually come!
In 2016, the Japanese Film Festival, under the theme of “Shapes of Love,”proudly presented nine new and most recent films including the films from international award-winning directors. This year it was organized not only in Bangkok and Chiang Mai but also in Khon Kaen and Surat Thani for the first time.
The Opening Film was “Love & Peace,”the newest and most original work from Sion Sono who won the Caligari Film Award (of the Berlin International Film Festival) and International Federation of Film Critics Award. At the opening event, Yu Kaneko, a Film Critic, from Japan was invited to talk about love and Japanese youth, the Japanese subculture, and current situations of Japanese films through films that were screened in the Japanese Film Festival 2016 such as “Love & Peace.”
Apart from “Love & Peace,”we recommended a special selection of films which would make the audience’s hearts beating and thoughts flourishing towards different shapes of love from, for instance,“Three Stories of Love”(by Director Ryosuke Hashiguchi) which won the Newcomer Award of the 39th Japanese Academy and “Kin Kyori Renai”(starred by Yamashita Tomohisa) which was based on and adapted from a famous girl manga . The Japanese Film Festival was a unique venue which selected Japanese films could be relished only once a year in Thailand.

The talk introduced about Japanese youth and love in various generations in relations with the Japanese culture and subculture through some films in the Japanese Film Festival 2016 such as Love & Peace and My Pretend Girlfriend.

Editor of LIFE, the Bangkok Post. Film Critic. Documentary Filmmaker. Board member of Thai Film Archive. Writer for the Bangkok Post’s column about film criticism more than 19 years. Scriptwriter of ‘The Island Funeral” (2015, directed by Pimpaka Towira) which won the Asian Future Section Prize from the 28th Tokyo International Film Festival. |
