The life story of Seikichi, a 70-year-old fisherman living on Okinawa Island, who resides with his 12-year-old grandson Akira. Not far from their home, on the beach, lies the buried skull of a kamikaze pilot from World War II. Though many years have passed, the memories and love tied to that skull remain vivid and unforgettable.

A major test awaits Akira and Koichi, two inseparable 10-year-old best friends, at the start of the new school term when they are placed in different classrooms. At first, neither is too worried, but as time goes by and new friendships form, their bond begins to weaken.

Based on the final screenplay written by legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, this film follows Misawa Ihei, a masterless samurai, and his wife Tayo, who seek shelter from the rain in an inn with a group of travelers. To lighten the mood, Ihei entertains the guests by treating them to meals. In order to fund this, he decides to fight and gamble against warriors at the Shigeaki castle.
