“An Open Draft – Asia Film Programmers Lab #3”

The Japan Foundation (JF) invites applications for An Open Draft – Asia Film Programmers Lab #3, an international exchange program for emerging film programmers and screening professionals from Japan and Southeast Asia. As part of the Partnership to Co-create a Future with the Next Generation: WA Project 2.0, launched to commemorate the 50th Year of ASEAN–Japan Friendship and Cooperation, The program aims to strengthen professional networks and promote cultural exchange through Japanese cinema.
The program consists of three phases. In the first phase, participants from ASEAN countries and Japan will gather in Tokyo for an intensive workshop on film programming, Japanese cinema, and professional networking. Participants will also attend selected events of the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), including screenings, talk sessions, TIFFCOM, and networking events.
First Phase: Workshop in Tokyo
23–31 October 2026 (9 days including arrival and departure date)
During the second phase, ASEAN participants will organize Japanese film screening programs or other film-related cultural events in their home countries, applying the knowledge and networks developed during the workshop.
Second Phase (Screening events by participants from ASEAN countries)
Between January and July 2027 (timing to be discussed individually with JF).
In the third phase, Japanese participants will curate screening programs featuring Southeast Asian cinema based on their experiences during the project and present them in Japan together with reports on their participation.
Through these activities, the program seeks to cultivate long-term professional collaboration between Japan and ASEAN while encouraging new perspectives on Japanese cinema.
Eligibility*
Applicants must:
- Be emerging film programmers who are based in Thailand.
- Age : up to around 45 years old or younger
- with up to around 15 years of professional experience
- Have organized or curated at least two screening projects or events either individually or collectively. Working as an assistant to senior programmers/curators may count.
- Commit to keep working on screening activities (especially related to Japanese films).
- Commit to full participation in all events and phases of the project.
- Possess intermediate or higher English proficiency and able to communicate in English throughout the program.
